As Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) National General Secretary, Ram Madhav, stepped onto the courtyard of the party office in Guwahati, a large crowd of supporters burst into chants: “Bharat Mata Ki Jai; BJP Zindabad.”
At 11.00 am, the BJP was leading with 51 seats and several of its candidates had made a cut in the Congress strongholds: Thowra, Majuli, Dispur, Rangiya, Lumdind and other parts of East Guwahati.
Mr.Madhav pushed through the crowd to address the media. Thanking the people of Assam for giving “huge support” to the party, Mr.Madhav was quick to lash out at the Congress.
“The defeat of Congress in Assam means the people of India have seriously accepted BJP’s Congress-free-India slogan,” said Mr.Madhav, “People are even rejecting those parties who forge alliances with Congress”.
Mr.Madhav emphasized on the need of preserving the identity of Assam along with the development of the State. “Assam state is important for us as it comes under Prime Minister Modi’s ‘act east’ policy. Assam will certainly see the great transformation ahead.”
Speaking to The Hindu, BJP’s Member of Parliament from Guwahati, Bijoya Chakravarty, said Himanta Biswa Sarma’s entry in the party gave a “big boost” to the party. “Himanta factor did work in our favour,” Ms.Chakravarty said.
